Why it’s so hard to show up

Yesterday morning, amongst the chaos of getting far too many tiny humans ready for school, I asked my 4 year old if she'd brushed her teeth. “Totally, mom!”, she said, while covering her eyes.

I'll let you in on a little secret. For years I've been telling my kids that their eyes change colour when they lie, and that only I can see it. Naturally, they believe me. So, little do they know, covering their eyes is a dead giveaway for me!

I shuffled her back to the bathroom to actually brush her teeth and thought about how many conversations I've had with my clients about this exact thing:

It's hard to show up honestly and openly.

Being totally yourself in your content (unbrushed teeth or otherwise) is vulnerable AF, and it feels so much safer to just cover your eyes and be who you think your audience wants you to be.

But here's the thing: the more yourself you are in your content, the more of the right people you'll attract.

Yes, it might take a bit longer, and you might have a smaller following, but an engaged audience of ideal customers > a ton of people who don't really know who you are.

ALWAYS!

Ok, so that's all lovely and inspriational, but like HOW do you actually start showing up as yourself?

The first step is to reframe what Instagram means to you.

Stop looking at it as something that will validate or invalidate your entire business (or your existence as a human) and start using it as a resource to build community.

Instagram is a way to connect with people and let them in to your genius. It's a tool that works for you, not the other way around.

Once your brain can buy into this truth, it'll become so much easier to show up as yourself.

Are you fired up? Cuz I sure am! I can't wait to see what you create with this new perspective in mind.

See you on the 'gram,

Sarah
