Content creation workflow

Ever wonder what it’s like to create content for a living? Cuz, trust me, it's a lot of content 😅.

I want to show you my content creation workflow so that you can take what feels good and apply it to your own business.

When it comes to static posts and carousels, here's how it goes down:

Step 1: Organize.

To get started, I put all of my content ideas in Trello. It’s so important to store your ideas in an organized and accessible way (aka NOT your notes app) so that they don’t get lost or forgotten about.

I love Trello because it’s free and also because you can add each idea as a new board. You can see a whole bunch of content ideas at a glance, and develop each idea within its own board. You can get more clear on your strategy by organizing your boards around the purpose of each post: education, value share, inspiration, entertainment, selling, etc.

Step 2: Create.

Once the idea is developed in Trello, I head to Canva (and for this I use the paid version) to create my graphics. I use brand photography, fonts, and colours to create a consistent and cohesive look that’s in line with the overall brand strategy.

I like to alternate types of visuals (photos, text only, a mixture of both) to keep content engaging.

When I’m creating for myself or my clients, I always keep grid content business-related. The stories, however, are fair game for anything!

Step 3: Optimize.

I always use a strong hook in the caption to get the audience’s attention. I love to ask a question, make a bold statement, give a hot take or unpopular opinion, or use a negative word, like “don't do [this thing related to your industry].”

Next, I make sure that the goal of the caption is clear: what do I want the audience to take away from this post? A new way of thinking about something? An actionable tip? A laugh? A moment of connection?

Finally, I include a call to action: what do I want the audience to do? Comment? Send a DM? Share their experience? It’s hard to get engagement without specifically asking for it!

Step 4: Schedule.

To be totally honest, I like to schedule posts right within Instagram. You can check out Planoly or Loomly for some other options, but keeping it as simple as possible is key for consistent posting.

Creating content is a process! When you can break it down into more manageable chunks like this, it feels less overwhelming. Depending on how you like to create, you could batch within each step, or work through the steps for each piece of content.

I can’t wait to see what you create!
